How This Calendar Works
The Age Formula
We use a breed-size-adjusted formula based on veterinary research. The first year of a dog's life equals about 12–15 human years depending on size. The second year adds about 6–9 human years. After that, each dog year equals roughly 4–7 human years, with larger breeds aging faster.
For example, a 3-year-old small dog is about 28 in human years. A 3-year-old giant breed is about 34. That difference grows over time.
Milestone Windows
Each milestone covers a range of dates because development isn't a single day. "Adolescence" might span 6–18 months depending on breed size. The calendar shows the window so you know when to expect changes in behavior, energy, and health needs.
Vet Check-Up Timing
Puppies need visits every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks old. Adult dogs benefit from annual check-ups. Seniors should go every 6 months. The calendar suggests windows for these visits, but always follow your own vet's schedule.
Common Mistakes
- Using the 7-year rule. It overestimates young dog ages and underestimates old dog ages.
- Ignoring breed size. A 10-year-old Chihuahua and a 10-year-old Great Dane are in very different life stages.
- Skipping senior check-ups. Dogs over 7 (large breeds) or 10 (small breeds) need more frequent vet visits.
- Forgetting adoption anniversaries. These matter just as much as birthdays for rescue dogs.
Rescue Dogs
If you adopted your dog and don't know their exact birth date, use the adoption date as the starting point. Many rescues provide an estimated age from a vet. You can enter that as the birth date and select "Birth Date" as the type. The milestones will still be useful as general guideposts.
Printing Cards
Each milestone card is designed to print on a single sheet. Click "Print Card" on any milestone to open a print-friendly version. For best results, use letter-size paper and set margins to "None" or "Minimum" in your print settings.
